Abstract

Background: Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) infection is an intestinal nematode worm infection transmitted through soil media. Good hand washing habits have a very important role in controlling STH infections. STH infections can cause growth disorders, anaemia, nutritional deficiencies, cognitive disorder especially in children, weight loss, and decreased quality of human resources. This study aims to determine the relationship between hand washing habits and STH infection in Rumah Tahfidz Yatim Dhuafa Persaudaraan Muslimah (RTYD Salimah) Palembang students. Method: This study was an analytic observational research with a cross sectional research design. Samples consist of 54 students selected by simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by direct interview using questionnaires, and fecal contamination was examined using Kato Katz methode. The data were analyzed by using Fisher's Exact statistical test. Result: The study revealed that the proportion of STH infections was 1.9% (1 research subject) with 100% A. lumbricoides infection. Poor hand washing habit generally was 74.1%, while the proportion of poor hand washing habits before eating, after defecation, and after playing with soil were 64.8%; 22.2%; and 48.1%. Statistical tests showed no significant association between general hand washing habits (p=0.259; p>0.05), hand washing habits before eating (p=0.352; p>0.05), hand washing habits after defecation (p=1.000; p>0.05) and hand washing habits after playing with soil (p=1.000; p>0.05) with STH infection. Conclusion: There was no significant association between handwashing habits in general, before eating, after defecation, and after playing with soil and STH infection in students of RTYD Salimah Palembang.
