Abstract

Background: Blood transfusion is a medical procedure that improves health and saves a person's life. However, blood transfusions can carry the risk of transmitting Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTI), such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis. Blood donor with reactive TTI is declared unfit for transfusion, usually referred to as deferral blood. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTI) from deferral blood at UDD PMI South Sumatra. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study using secondary data from blood donation forms and laboratory data recaps at UDD PMI South Sumatra for the period of August 2020 – December 2022 which meet the inclusion criteria and do not meet the exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019 and SPSS V22 in the form of a frequency distribution. Results: The prevalence of TTI for the 2020 – 2022 period in UDD PMI South Sumatra was 3,5% of 8537 donors. The prevalence of TTI in 2020 was 3,1%; in 2021 was 2.8%; and in 2022 was 3.9%. Donors’ age were 25 – 44 years (57,8%), male (75,6%), unknown occupation (28,8%), voluntary donor (92,9%), and repeat donor (67,6%). The highest proportion of TTI based on age, gender, occupation, type of donor and donor status was found to be those aged 25 – 44 years (55,2%), male (83,8%), unknown occupation (29,7 %), voluntary donor (94,6%), and repeat donor (54,5%). Conclusion: The prevalence of TTI for the 2020 - 2022 period at the UDD PMI of South Sumatra was 3,5% of 8537 donors.
