Abstract

For developing countries, income distribution inequality is a serious problem, and cannot be separated from the problem of poverty, including countries located within ASEAN. This study aims to analyze the effect of the human development, investment (FDI), and export indices on income distribution inequality in 5 countries in ASEAN during the period 2011-2021. The data used are secondary data sourced from the World Inequality Database (WID), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the World Bank. The analysis technique in this study uses panel data analysis method with Fixed Effect Model estimation. The results of this study suggest that the human development index variable has a significant effect on income distribution inequality, which means that the human development index variable is good enough to overcome the problem of income inequality. Furthermore, the export variable shows a significant influence on income distribution inequality which means exports do show an increase but their effect on inequality actually increases the level of inequality, this is because exports are still too focused on capital-intensive sectors instead of labor-intensive so that human labor becomes less needed which results in reduced opportunities to get jobs, increase income, and reduce Unemployment, so that exports that continue to increase actually increase the level of inequality instead of lowering it. However, the investment variable (FDI) does not have a significant influence on the inequality of income distribution, because the investment variable (FDI) in its distribution, the benefits or results of investment are still not felt by the community as a whole and only certain groups benefit from investment.
