Abstract

Background: The high number of TB cases in Indonesia means that TB is still a problem in Indonesia. Children and adolescents often do not receive proper diagnosis, resulting in misdiagnosis. TB is strongly influenced by the immune system of each individual, causing the characteristics of each child to vary. Some children can be treated on an outpatient basis. Some have complications that require hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in characteristics of outpatient and inpatient pediatric pulmonary TB patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Methods: This study used observational analytic research method with cross sectional design. Samples were taken according to the predetermined sample size and in accordance with the inclusion criteria. The data taken were primary data obtained through interviews based on questionnaires and secondary data through patient medical record data. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. Bivariate analysis used Chi Square (X2) statistical test with an α value of 0.05. Results: Of the 43 children with pulmonary TB whose data were collected at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, most were children aged 0-5 years, male gender, outpatient treatment, only clinical pulmonary TB, low parental income, comorbid diseases with other diseases (heart disease, nasopharyngitis, epilepsy, anemia, cerebral hemorrhage), clinical symptoms of weight loss/no weight gain, BCG immunization history present, TB contact unknown, poor nutritional status, positive tuberculin test results, negative TCM sputum results, and infiltrate thoracic photographs. Conclusion: There are differences in characteristics, such as parental income, clinical symptoms (fever ≥ 2 weeks, cough ≥ 2 weeks, and malaise), and TCM sputum examination results in outpatient and inpatient pediatric pulmonary TB patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang.
