Abstract

Background. Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a disease with a high prevalence, especially in developing countries. Complications of CSOM are usually caused by progressive bone erosion due to ongoing infection. This increases morbidity, mortality, and causes a decrease in the patient's quality of life. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of chronic suppurative otitis media patients with complications at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Methods. This study is an observational descriptive study. The sampling technique is total sampling. The data used were medical records of patients with chronic suppurative otitis media in the Medical Record Installation of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang from 2019 ─ 2022, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This data was processed using SPSS version 27. Results. The total number of samples in this study was 133 subjects. CSOM patients with complications were mostly in the age range of 31-40 years (24.1%). The majority of patients were male (57.9%). The most common clinical symptom was otorrhea (98.5%) and most were found with duration of complaints >5 years (46.6%). The most common tympanic membrane perforation location was total type (36.1%). The most common hearing loss was the conductive type (53.4%) and the majority was severe (27.8%). The most common intratemporal complication found in CSOM patients was mastoiditis (54.1%), while the most common intracranial complication was brain abscess (4.5%), and the most common extracranial complication was retroauricular abscess (12.8%).
