Abstract

Background: Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is some type of potatoes that commonly used as an alternative for rice. Eventhough purple sweet potato was known to had phytopharmacal potentials, there is still few scientific literatures about the using of purple sweet potato as a therapeutic choice for renal fibrosis. This study is aimed to measure the efficacy of purple sweet potato extract in reducing urea levels in a Wistar rat with renal fibrosis model. Method: An in vivo experimental research with pre-post test with controlled group designed had been held at Animal House, Biotechnology and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University and the Palembang Health Laboratory Center in September-October 2023. Thirty white male Wistar rat by age 2-3 month and weighed 175-250 gram was divided into 5 groups, such as negative control (CMC 0,5%), positive control (navitas 10%), purple sweet potato extract 50 mg/kgBW (EUJU 50), 100 mg/kgBW (EUJU 100), and 200 mg/kgBW (EUJU 200) by 6 rats each. The treatment was given for 14 days. Before the treatment was given, each of the rats was injected by gentamicin at dose 80 mg/kgBW intraperitoneally for 7 days to induce renal fibrosis. After the treatment, rat blood was taken from retroorbitalis plexus at rat’s eyes to measures urea levels on day 0, 7, and 21. The data were analyzed by using SPSS application. Result: The body weight of rats was homogeneous. The urea levels of rats was normally distributed and homogeneous. All group were having a significant increasing of urea levels after getting induced by gentamicin. All group except negative control were having a significant decrease of urea levels after the treatment based on their group. EUJU 100 and EUJU 200 were more effective on decreasing urea levels than EUJU 50. EUJU 200 was an effective dose for decreasing urea levels on wistar rat with renal fibrosis model. Conclusion: Purple sweet potato extract was effective to reduce urea levels in a Wistar rat renal fibrosis model. The effective dose for decreasing urea levels on wistar rat with renal fibrosis model is EUJU 200
