Abstract

Background: Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a carbohydrate food other than rice that is rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. There is few scientific research on the use of purple sweet potato as an herbal therapy ingredient to treat fibrosis. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of purple sweet potato extract on reducing serum creatinine levels in Wistar rats renal fibrosis model. Method: An in vivo experimental research was carried out in September-October 2023 at the Animal House, Biochemistry Laboratory and Biotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University and the Palembang Chemical Laboratory Center. Male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months with body weight 175-250 grams were 30 divided into 5 treatment groups negative control (CMC 0.5%), positive control (navitas 10%), EUJU 50 mg/kgBW, EUJU 100 mg/kgBW , and EUJU 200 mg/kgBW with each group containing 6 Wistar rats. Each group was injected with gentamicin intraperitoneally at a dose of 80 mg/kgBW for 7 days, then treated according to the group. Data were analyzed by using Paired T test, Independent T test, and PostHoc Test on SPSS Statistic 26 application. Results: Rat body weight and creatinin levels were homogenous. Giving purple sweet potato extract doses of 50 mg /kgBW, 100 mg / kgBW, and 200 mg / kgBW to Wistar rats renal fibrosis model significantly reduced the mean creatinine levels. The lowest creatinine levels were shown in the group of rats given 200 mg/kgBW dose of purple sweet potato extract compared to the positive control. Conclusion: Purple sweet potato extract is effective in reducing creatinin levels in Wistar rats renal fibrosis model. The most effective dose of purple sweet potato extract is 200 mg/kgBW.
