Abstract

Background. Pneumothorax is a respiratory emergency that requires immediate treatment. Pneumothorax can occur with apparently normal lungs or in the presence of underlying lung disease, and can occur spontaneously or after trauma. This study aims to determine the characteristics of pneumothorax patients treated at Siti Fatimah Az-Zahra Hospital, South Sumatra. Methods. This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design using secondary data sourced from medical record data of pneumothorax patients at Siti Fatimah AZ-Zahra Hospital, South Sumatra for the period 2020 - 2023 who have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results. From this study, pneumothorax patients at Siti Fatimah AZ-Zahra Hospital South Sumatra in the period 2020 – 2023 had the highest distribution in patients with the age group 16 - 30 years (40%), male gender (77.5%), the most common etiology was patients with a history of pulmonary TB (60%), the most commonly used management was the installation of chest tubes and WSD (45%), most patients had no complications and the most common complication was hydro-pneumothorax, the most common outcome was recovery (85%), most patients took <120 minutes to reach the hospital after the trauma (72.5%), and the most common duration of hospitalization was >7 days (45%). Conclusion. Most cases of pneumothorax at Siti Fatimah Az-Zahra Hospital South Sumatra Period 2020 - 2023 were male, aged 16-30 years, caused by a history of pulmonary TB, managed with chest tube and WSD installation, most patients did not experience complications, could recover, took <120 minutes to reach the hospital after the trauma, and most were treated >7 days Keywords.
