Abstract

Background: The intestinal worm infection known as Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) is mostly spread through soil medium during the egg and larval development stages. If humans come into contact with polluted soil, especially in areas where personal hygiene is lacking, they may become infected with infectious eggs and larvae. Refusing to trim and clean your fingernails is a sign of bad hygiene. Children's development and growth can be impacted by STH infection. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between STH infection and hand nail hygiene among Palembang City RTYD Salimah students. Methods: This study was an observational analytic with a cross sectional design and a minimum sample size of 62 children. The study was carried out in July– Desember 2023 at RTYD Salimah Palembang and the Laboratory of Basic Chemistry and Bio Optics Sriwijaya University's Faculty of Medicine. Questionnaires, nail observations, and the Kato Katz method of examining respondents' excrement in a lab were all used in the data collection process. The results obtained were analyzed using Fisher's Exact Test. Results: Out of 62 samples, 1 sample was infected with STH with a prevalence of 1.6%. The STH worm found was A. lumbricoides with low helminthiasis intensity. Statistical tests showed no significant association between fingernail hygiene and STH infection (p = 0.278 (p>0.05) and PR=0.933 (95% CI 0.815-1.069)). Conclution: Fingernail hygiene is not a risk factor for STH infection. Key words: Cross sectional, STH infection, fingernail hygiene, RTYD Salimah
