Abstract

Background. Congenital heart disease, also known as congenital heart defects (CHD), refers to anatomical abnormalities in the heart and major blood arteries that affect humans from the time of conception. The prevalence reaches eight to ten per 1000 births. Heart failure symptoms might range from pallor, cold acral, tachycardia or may also be asymptomatic. Heart murmurs may support the diagnosis of congenital heart disease. Therefore, stethoscope auscultation of the heart is a crucial test for verifying the diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Although echocardiography is thought to be the most effective way to confirm a CHD diagnosis, the examiner's abilities have a significant impact on the outcome. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of heart murmur auscultation by medical students and pediatric specialist candidates compared to echocardiography in detecting congenital heart defects Methods. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive-analytic study at the Muhammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang. The participants range in age from 0 months to 18 years. The results will then be compared with the gold standard echocardiography examination. The data will be analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 27. Results. The accuracy of heart murmur auscultation in medical student education is 62%, and in pediatric specialist doctor candidates, it is 64% in establishing a diagnosis of congenital heart defects. Out of 354 subjects suspected of having congenital heart disease, 204 were male and 150 were female. The sensitivity of auscultation by medical students and pediatric specialist doctor candidates is 41.2% and 42.2%, respectively. The specitifity of auscultation by medical students and pediatric specialist doctor candidates is 91% and 95%, respectively. Conclusion. When compared to an echocardiography examination, the accuracy of auscultation amongst medical students and pediatric specialist candidates is still insufficient.
