Abstract

A fermentor is a device used in the fermentation process for bioethanol production. The development of computational technology has contributed significantly to understanding and optimizing fermentor performance. One of the approaches used is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, which enables numerical simulations of fluid flow and mass transfer within the fermentor. CFD simulations on the fermentor are conducted to improve understanding of the system's flow behavior and mass distribution. The CFD simulations integrate the Navier-Stokes equations to depict fluid movement and the conservation of mass equation to model mass transfer during fermentation. In this study, variations in the shape and speed of the agitator are used as the adjustable parameters. Agitator designs such as the 4-blade impeller and 6-Rushton Turbine are employed in this research with agitator speeds of 20, 40, 60, and 100 rpm to observe their influence on fluid flow and mass transfer within the fermentor. Variations in the glucose-water feed ratio of 1:4 and 2:3 are also investigated. Critical parameters such as flow velocity and mass distribution can be interpreted in detail using CFD. This study explores variations in fermentor geometry, impeller configuration, rotation speed, and other operating conditions to optimize fermentor performance. Moreover, CFD analysis identifies stagnant regions or areas with low flow velocity within the fermentor. This information can be used to optimize fermentor design, including selecting agitator shape and speed to avoid stagnant areas. The experiments and CFD simulations determined optimal variations of agitator shape and agitator speed under operating conditions of 100 rpm and a 1:4 glucose-water ratio. The 4-blade impeller type was the most suitable based on power consumption, fluid flow distribution, and homogenization time of the water-glucose mixture.
