Abstract

Background : Hearing is one of the essential components used to interact and communicate with fellow humans and with the surrounding environment. Hearing impairment can cause difficulties in communicating while socializing. Polytechnic is a vocational college whose educational system performs more practice than theory. This is because the Polytechnic has the goal of creating a human being who can directly work the medium field in the industry. In regards to that, Polytechnic students need a practical training ground used to apply the given theoretical knowledge, such as a laboratory or workshop with technological equipment where they make a loud noise when used and almost every week students of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic mechanical engineering practice At the workshop. This is feared to have an influence on the student's life skills. The most affected health effect is hearing function. Methods : This type of research is an observational descriptive study. The sample in this study is a 2021 Sriwijaya State Polytechnic Mechanical Engineering student who meets the inflation criteria. The sample in this study was 168 people with consequential sampling techniques. Results : In this study, the sample consisted of 160 males (95.2%) and 8 females (8%). The characteristics of respondents in this study were most common in the 20-year-old (42.9%). All samples are subjected to noise exposure from the machine for ≥ 60 minutes per day and < 6 days per week. An overview of hearing function was obtained in the normal right ear of 159 people (94.6%) and 9 people (5.4%) experienced a decrease in hearing function in the form of mild deafness. Meanwhile, in the normal left ear, 162 people (96.4%), had a decrease in hearing function in the form of light deafness by 5 people (3%) and moderate deafness by 1 person (0.6%). Conclusion : In this study, it was concluded that there was a decrease in hearing function in the 2021 Sriwijaya Army Polytechnic mechanical engineering students.
