Abstract

Background. WHO defines low birth weight babies as newborns weighing less than 2500 grams. There are several factors that can cause low birth weight babies, namely premature birth and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). One of the complications that can occur in LBW is hypothermia which can cause breathing problems in infants, low blood sugar levels, and even death. One method to maintain the baby's body temperature is Kangaroo Method Care which is proven to maintain the baby's body temperature. Lack of knowledge about neonate care especially for LBW in mothers and families can be one of the factors hindering the success of LBW care, therefore it is necessary to conduct research to see the level of knowledge and application of KMC in mothers with LBW. Methods. This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. There were 23 respondents, namely mothers with LBW who were treated in the neonate room and NICU room. The data obtained was the result of filling out a questionnaire which was then analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Results. The results of the study on 23 respondents showed that 91.3% of mothers had poor knowledge of Kangaroo Method Care, out of 23 respondents only 13% applied KMC and all of them had a poor level of application. Based on sociodemographic status, it was found that more mothers were aged 20-35 years (73.9%), mothers were Muslim (95.7%), mothers graduated from high school (69.6%), mothers who did not work (91.3%), and mothers who had never implemented KMC (91.3%). Conclusion. Mothers who have good knowledge of KMC are still few (8.7%) and there are still many who have not implemented KMC (87%) and mothers who implement KMC (13%) all havea poor level of implementation.
