Abstract

Background: Oxygen therapy (O2) is a medical step that involves the administration of oxygen (O2) as an effort to prevent or correct oxygen deficiency in tissues and ensure adequate oxygenation levels. This study aims to determine the characteristics of children who use oxygen therapy and their outcomes in critically ill children at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method: Descriptive observational research in a cross-sectional manner. Samples were taken by consecutive sampling according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were obtained through observation and administrative data recording. Results: During the study period, a total of 105 samples were obtained that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria from 115 patients in the emergency room, PICU, and hospitalization who used oxygen therapy. The results of the general characteristics of critically ill pediatric patients using oxygen therapy were dominated by patients from the PICU (62.9%), male gender (51.4%), age group 13 - 18 years (25.7%), poor nutritional status (38.1%), initial respiratory disease (40%), non-surgical patients (74.3%), PELOD-2 low severity score (75.2%), type of nasal cannula oxygen therapy (43.8%), duration of therapy <7 days (86.7%), and improvement outcomes (54.3%). Conclusion: Male gender, 13-18 years old, and poor nutritional status were the most common characteristics in this study. Respiratory distress was the most common indication for the use of oxygen therapy with the majority using nasal cannula. Age, operative status, S/F ratio, and P/F ratio were risk factors affecting the use of oxygen therapy. Keywords: Children, Critically Ill, Oxygen Therapy
