Abstract

Introduction: Head lice infestation is an infection caused by the human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, affecting the skin and scalp. P. h. capitis is an ectoparasite belonging to the family pediculidae, feeding on sebaceous secretions and bodily fluids. Head lice infestation is more likely to occur in densely populated areas with poor environmental sanitation, such as orphanages. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hair characteristics and hair washing hygiene with the occurrence of head lice infestation in children at Nurul Huda and Rizky Raisyah Orphanages in Palembang City. Method: This study utilized an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The study sample was obtained through total sampling, involving a total of 70 children who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on hair characteristics and hair washing cleanliness were obtained through questionnaire completion and direct observation of the respondents' heads. The data were processed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. Results: The prevalence of head lice (pediculosis capitis) in the Nurul Huda and Rizky Raisyah Orphanages in Palembang City was 28.6%. The chi-square test results for all respondents revealed that there was no significant relationship between hair color and the occurrence of head lice (p=0.666). However, there was a significant relationship between hair length (p=0.000), hair type (p=0.000), and hair washing cleanliness (p=0.007) with the occurrence of head lice. Hair length was the most dominant variable influencing the occurrence of head lice. Conclusion: The study conducted at Nurul Huda and Rizky Raisyah Orphanages in Palembang City indicated that there was no relationship between hair color and the occurrence of head lice (pediculosis capitis). Furthermore, there was a relationship between hair length, hair type, and hair washing cleanliness with the occurrence of head lice. Hair length was the most dominant variable influencing the occurrence of head lice.
