Abstract
Background: Over the last 10 years, Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have played an important role in predicting patient prognosis in several types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. TILs play a significant role in the Tumor Microenvironment (TME) and can influence prognosis. Associations between clinico-histopathological characteristics and TIL density have been observed in other cancers. Further research, especially on the serous subtype as the most common subtype, can provide broader insight and support the development of more effective therapies. Methods: The research was conducted using a cross sectional method. The samples for this study were hematoxylin eosin (H&E) staining preparations of serous subtype ovarian cancer tissue which were stored in the Department of Anatomical Pathology as well as medical record data at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The percentage of TILs was calculated in the stromal and intratumoral areas by dividing the area occupied by TILs by the total area. Then the comparison of TILs density based on clinicohistopathological characteristics was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. Results: In this study, ovarian cancer cases were predominantly aged ≥ 45 years (65.7%), HGSC (74.3%), advanced stage (77.1%), and had close metastases (62.9%). Comparison of stromal TIL density based on age and metastasis was significantly different (p < 0.05) in serous ovarian cancer patients, while TIL density was not significantly different in both intratumoral and stromal based on grading and stage. Conclusion: The density of stromal TILs based on age and metastasis had significant differences (p < 0.05).
