Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder occurring when the body cannot produce enough insulin hormone or use it effectively, leading to an increase in blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus can result in various complications, one of which is diabetic foot ulcers. Various risk factors influence the occurrence of diabetic ulcers, including self-foot care. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang General Hospital. Method: This study is an analytical observational research utilizing a cross-sectional approach. The sample size for this research consisted of 82 samples obtained using primary data that met the inclusion criteria. Data collection involved a questionnaire containing sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Results: Among the 82 samples, the majority of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were found in the late elderly age group (56 – 65 years) (40,2%), female (53,7%), with a high school education (31,7%), Malay ethnicity (86,6%), having suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus for more than 5 years (63,4%), having a history of diabetic ulcers (57.3%), experiencing diabetic foot ulcers (50%), primarily grade 4 ulcers (39%), having adequate/good knowledge (72%), a positive attitude (58,5%), and good behavior (57,3%). In the bivariate analysis, there was no significant relationship found between knowledge (p=0,806) and the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers, but there were was a significant relationships found between attitude (p=0.806) and behavior (p=0,004) with the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between knowledge with the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers, but there is a significant relationship between attitude and behavior with the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang General Hospital.
