Abstract
Background. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a histopathological diagnosis of the prostate, indicating an increase in the number of non-cancerous stromal cells and epithelial cells in the prostate gland. Assessing Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in BPH patients using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) can provide a deep insight into the severity of symptoms and their impact on the patient's quality of life. This research aims to understand the profile of LUTS in BPH patients in two Palembang City hospitals. Methods. This research is an observational descriptive research utilizing primary data obtained through IPSS questionnaire from BPH patients who visited the Urology Surgery Polyclinic at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang General Hospital and Siloam Sriwijaya Palembang Hospital between September – November 2023. The research samples were collected using a non-probability sampling method with consecutive sampling technique. Results. There were 49 samples in this research. The characteristics of BPH patients with LUTS complaints were mostly found in the age range of 60 - 69 years (49%), normal BMI and obesity I (34.7% each), had a history of hypertension (59.2%), had no history of diabetes (81.6%), had no history of smoking (65.3%), had no history of alcohol consumption (93.9%). Most BPH patients experienced nocturia (89.9%). BPH patients encountered mostly with moderate severity (57.1%), and a quality of life score of 5 "generally dissatisfied" (32.7%). Conclusion. BPH patients with LUTS complaints in this study were found with the majority experienced storage complaints and the three symptoms (obstruction, storage and post-micturition) were dominated by nocturia, moderate severity level, quality of life score 5 "generally dissatisfied".
