Abstract

Background: Breast milk is a very important, main and best first food for babies because it is natural and rich in the nutrients that toddlers need. The accumulated coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in South Sumatra is 61.03% and has not yet reached the national target, even though breast milk plays an important role in the physical and mental growth and development process of children with long-term impacts including preventing nutritional problems in children. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the nutritional status of toddlers aged 6-24 months in the Puskesmas Sebelas Ilir work area. Method: The research design used was observational analytics with a cross-sectional. There were 80 respondents who were toddlers and their mothers. The data obtained were primary data in the form of direct anthropometric examinations on toddlers and exclusive breastfeeding questionnaires filled out by their mothers, then analyzed using the 27th edition of the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. Results: Of the total 80 samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the mother respondents involved were mostly aged 20-35 years (55%), relatively low education level (55%), good level of knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding (93.8%) , not working (90%), and multiparous status (68.8%). Coverage of history of exclusive breastfeeding was 66.3%. The nutritional status of toddlers based on weight for length, weight for age, and length for age is mostly in the good nutrition category (76.3%), has normal weight (81.3%), and has normal height (81.3% ). There is a relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the nutritional status of toddlers based on weight for age, length for age, and weight for length (p = 0.017, p = 0.003, and p = 0.011). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the nutritional status of toddlers aged 6-24 months in the Puskesmas Sebelas Ilir work area.
