Abstract

Background. Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disease characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue. Adolescents with obesity have the potential to experience metabolic syndrome. The goal was to understand the relationship between nutritional status and the clinical signs profile, menstrual cycle, and body image levels of adolescents. Method. The research was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The data taken was primary data obtained through direct measurements and answer questionnaires from students of SMAN 4 and SMAN 8 Palembang. Results. This study showed a significant relationship between overweight and normal nutritional status with hypertension (p=0.005; OR=2.673), menstrual cycle disorders (p=0.000; OR=11.813), the presence of acanthosis nigricans (p=0.004; OR=6.349), and body image levels (p=0.000; OR=9.070). The study also showed a significant relationship between obesity and normal nutritional status with hypertension (p=0.000; OR=8.368), menstrual cycle disorders (p=0.012; OR=9.625), acanthosis nigricans (p=0.000; OR=25.350), and body image levels (p=0.002; OR=5.789). The analysis results also indicated a significant relationship between obesity and overweight status with hypertension (p=0.016; OR=3.13) and acanthosis nigricans (p=0.008; OR=3.993). Meanwhile, adolescents with obesity and overweight had the same risk of experiencing menstrual cycle disorders (p = 0.872; OR=0.815) and decreased self-confidence (p=0.595; OR=0.638). Conclusion. There was a significant relationship between overweight and normal nutritional status, obesity and normal nutritional status with the incidence of hypertension, menstrual cycle disorders, the presence of acanthosis nigricans, and decreased adolescent self-confidence. Adolescents with obese and overweight had the same risk of experiencing menstrual cycle disorders and decreased self-confidence. Keywords. Obesity; Overweight; Adolescent Profile; Metabolic Syndrome.
