Abstract

Backgroud. The adolescence period is a vulnerable stage in terms of nutrition due to several contributing factors. Firstly, there is rapid physical growth during adolescence. Secondly, lifestyle and dietary patterns often undergo changes during this period. Therefore, adolescents require a higher intake of nutrients. This can lead to nutritional problems if not handled appropriately. The 2018 Riskesdas estimates that around 49.6% of the Indonesian population aged between 15 and 19 years lacks sufficient physical activity. Insufficient physical activity can be a contributing factor to the emergence of excess nutritional status. In general, this research aims to explore the relationship between physical activity and dietary patterns with nutritional status in adolescents. Method. This type of research is an analytical observational study with a crosssectional study design to determine the relationship between physical activity and dietary patterns with the nutritional status of adolescents in SMAN 10 and SMAN 4 in the city of Palembang. Results. From the 206 research samples, it was found that adolescents with good nutritional status amounted to 123 individuals (59.7%), while adolescents with excess nutritional status were 83 individuals (40.3%). The description of physical activity among adolescents in SMAN 10 and SMAN 4 Palembang revealed that 119 adolescents (57.8%) had sufficient physical activity, while 87 adolescents (42.2%) had insufficient physical activity. The description of dietary patterns among adolescents in SMAN 10 and SMAN 4 Palembang indicated that 109 adolescents (52.9%) had a good dietary pattern, while 97 adolescents (47.1%) had a poor dietary pattern. This study demonstrates that physical activity is significantly associated with the nutritional status of adolescents in high schools in the city of Palembang, with a P-value of 0.002 and an Odds Ratio (OR) of 2.486. Similarly, dietary patterns are also significantly associated with the nutritional status of adolescents in high schools in the city of Palembang, with a P-value of 0.005 and an Odds Ratio (OR) of 2.252. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between physical activity and nutritional status in adolescents. There is a significant relationship between eating patterns and nutritional status among high school students at SMAN 10 and SMAN 4 Palembang.
