Abstract

Pesticides are substances or mixtures of different substances that have the same properties as one another. The use of pesticides to control pests, insects, weeds, and diseases that damage plants using chemicals. Around 80% of chili farmers in Indonesia use chemical pesticides including chili farmers in Pagar Alam City. But it does not guarantee that the use of pesticides is appropriate. Excessive, inappropriate, and long-term use of pesticides will have serious negative impacts on health, other organisms and the environment. Therefore, the research aims to determine the level of compliance of farmers in using pesticides and their effect on pest populations and types of disease pathogens, incidence and intensity of pest and disease attacks, natural enemy populations and neutral insects in chili plants. This research was conducted in several chili plants in Pagar Alam City, South Sumatra Province and started from August to November 2023. Data collection was carried out by survey using purposive sampling method by interviewing chili plant farmers regarding the use of pesticides on their plants and observing the types of pests and plant diseases, the incidence and intensity of attacks of pests and plant diseases, and observing the population of natural enemies and neutral insects on chili plants in the field. The observations were carried out using random sampling techniques, namely determining 5 points of mounds randomly, from each mound 6 sample plants were observed, so that each land was observed 30 sample plants. The results obtained are the age of chili farmers in Pagar Alam mostly have an age range of 31-40 years and the education level of farmers found to be mostly high school graduates. The level of compliance of chili farmers in the use of pesticides with an average score of 252.98 which is classified as a high category. So it is said that chili farmers have used many pesticides appropriately. Pesticide implementation compliance has a relationship with pest populations. Based on the results found pests from 5 orders, 10 families and 14 different species. The diversity index of pest species 1 < 1.04 ≤ 3 which means moderate diversity. The highest pest attack is Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) with an incidence of 29.14% and an intensity of 11.13% so that it is classified as a mild attack. The most common plant disease attacking chili plants is leaf spot disease caused by Cercospora sp. with an incidence of 54.73% and an intensity of 22.80% which is classified as a mild attack. The level of compliance with the use of pesticides has a very weak negative correlation with the incidence of pest attacks at -0.123 with an influence score of 1.5%. Meanwhile, the intensity of pest attacks has a weak negative correlation with a value of -0.228 and the effect of the pesticide score is 5.2%. The score of pesticide use with the incidence of disease attack has a correlation value of -0.457, which is quite strong with the influence of the pesticide score of 20.9%. The correlation of pesticide score with disease attack intensity is negatively strong with a correlation value of -0.712 and the effect of pesticide score is 50.7%. The pesticide implementation score also has a correlation with the population of natural enemies and neutral insects. The correlation of pesticide score with the population of predators, parasitoids, and neutral insects is very weak. Inappropriate use of pesticides can affect non-targets such as the presence of natural enemies and neutral insects. In addition to pesticide scores, other influences on pest and plant disease attacks, natural enemy populations and neutral insects are environmental conditions such as temperature, rainfall, and humidity. So the conclusion of this research is that 48.39% of chili plant farmers in Pagar Alam with a high level of pesticide implementation compliance. The correlation between pesticide implementation compliance with pest and plant disease attacks, natural enemy populations and neutral insects is classified as a very weak to strong negative correlation. The higher the pesticide implementation compliance score, the incidence and intensity of pest and disease attacks will decrease. If the use of pesticides is not appropriate, it can cause non-target organisms such as predators, parasitoids, and neutral insects to be killed and the occurrence of resistance and pest recurrence.
