Abstract

Background: Bacterial meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges caused by bacterial infection. Bacterial meningitis is still a neurological emergency with high morbidity and mortality rates at all ages, especially in developing countries. The most common causative bacteria vary by age and geographic location. Antibiotic administration is the main treatment as causal therapy against germs that cause bacterial meningitis. Unfortunately, in many countries including Indonesia, there is still a lot of irrational use of antibiotics. In fact, irrational use of antibiotics is the main driver of antibiotic resistance. Susceptibility patterns of bacterial meningitis-causing bacteria is important to know to help in the selection of effective and sensitive antibiotics so as to prevent poor output in bacterial meningitis patients. This study aims to determine the distribution of bacterial meningitis-causing bacteria and their susceptibility patterns to antibiotics in hospitalized patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method: This research was an observational descriptive study with a total sampling method using secondary data of laboratory data and patient medical records at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang for the period of January 2022–June 2023. Result: The study involved 64 patient and 71 cerebrospinal fluid culture results. Based on gender, patients were predominantly male (47 people/73.4%) and the highest age in the age group 1-18 years (22 people/34.4%). The bacteria found were dominated by CoNS (39/54.9%), followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (7/9.9%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (5/7%). CoNS has the highest level of sensitivity (100%) to nitrofurantoin and tigecycline. A. baumannii is sensitive to amikacin (85.4%). K. pneumoniae is sensitive to tigecycline (100%). CoNS has the highest sensitivity (100%) to nitrofurantoin and tigecycline. A. baumannii is sensitive to amikacin (85.4%). K. pneumoniae is sensitive to tigecycline (100%). Conclusion: Most bacterial meningitis patients were male and aged 1–18 years. The most common bacteria found are CoNS, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. CoNS is sensitive to nitrofurantoin and tigecycline. A. baumannii is sensitive to amikacin. K. pneumoniae is sensitive to tigecycline.
