Abstract

Oil palm is one type of plantation crop that is widely cultivated and is an important sector with high economic value. Basal stem rot disease can cause a massive mortality in replanting plantation resulting in a decrease in production per unit area. Taro plants have antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. The taro roots secrete an allelopathy root exudate that can alter the structure of local rhizosphere communities. This study aims to determine the effects of Japanese taro root exudate in suppressing growth colony and color changes of Ganoderma boninense Pat. on RBBR and tannin medium, in vitro decaying of oil palm roots, and suppression of G. boninense infections in planting potted oil palm seedlings in greenhouses. This study had three experiments using the complete randomized design method. First, growth and color change inhibition test in vitro with 4 treatments and 5 replications. Second, in vitro root decay test with 4 treatments and 3 replications. Third, pot experiment with 6 treatments and 5 replications in greenhouses. In the first experiment, it was proven that the addition of Japanese root exudate caused inhibition of the growth and the color change of G. boninense colony. In MEA + RBBR medium, root exudate weekly suppressed by 2% of colony growth, but strongly reduced color change of medium. In contrast, supplementation of the root exudate both strongly suppressed by 31% colony growth and the color change of medium. In the second experiment, Japanase taro root exudate did not affect the decaying of fresh palm roots colonized with G. boninense. There is no alignment between color changes in both MEA + RBBR and MEA + tanin with root decay as measured by the change of the dry weight. In the third experiment, intercropping of Japanese taro and oil palm seedlings inhibited the growth of oil palm seedlings and has no effect on inhibiting disease severity. Stem diameter, leaf area, and plant height of oil palm seedlings were significantly lower in mixed planting of oil palm and Japanese taro.
