Abstract

The climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) has a unique organ that is like a labyrinth and allows the fish to survive at low oxygen levels. During the rearing in controlled containers, leftover feed, and metabolic products can cause a decrease in water quality, affecting fish survival and growth. Phytoremediation is a solution to improve the water quality in fish culture media. This research aimed to determine the effect of Azolla pinnata as a phytoremediator on the physics and chemistry of water in the rearing media and measure the growth rate of climbing perch in the rearing media added with Azolla pinnata, as well as determine the optimal weight of Azolla pinnata that can be applied. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of 4 treatments with three replications, namely P0: without Azolla pinnata, P1: rearing Azolla pinnata 31.25 g m-2, P2: rearing Azolla pinnata 62.5 g m-2 and P3: rearing of Azolla pinnata 93.75 g m-2. The analysis of variance showed that the maintenance of Azolla pinnata in climbing perch rearing media had a significant effect on the physical and chemical water quality parameters tested, the survival and growth of climbing perch, and feed efficiency (P>0.05). The best treatment was obtained by treatment P1 (rearing of Azolla pinnata 31.25 g m m-2). The results showed that the treatment with 31.25 g m m-2of Azolla pinata was the best, resulting in an average value of dissolved oxygen of 4.43 mg L-1, an average of 0.03 mg L-1of ammonia, and 0.42 mg L-1 of nitrate, and the average turbidity value is 8.83 NTU. This treatment also showed the best results for survival, growth in length, and weight of climbing perch, as well as fish feed efficiency values of 98.33%, 0.73 cm, 1.24 g, and 44.26%. Keywords: Azolla pinnata, climbing perch, nitrification and phytoremediation
