Abstract

Introduction : Seizures are one of the most common neurological disorders in children, the most common etiologies of seizures in children include epilepsy, intracranial infections, febrile seizures, metabolic disorders, and others. What is expected in the therapeutic response to seizures is for the patient to be seizure-free for the rest of his life. This study aims to determine the etiology and therapeutic response of seizures in children with complaints of seizures at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method : This study used descriptive case series research design with total sampling. The samples of this study were all pediatric patients with complaints of seizures aged ≥1 month - 18 years who were registered in the inpatient register at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital for the period January - December 2022. Result : In this study, 109 samples were obtained, with the characteristics of subjects aged 1 year - <5 years (43.12%), male (52.3%). The majority of the frequency of seizures before hospitalization was >1x (56.9%) with seizure duration before hospitalization <5 minutes (50.5%), The most common etiology causing seizure complaints in this study was epilepsy (51.4%) with a response to seizure therapy stopping on its own (35.8%). The presence of seizures before admission >1 time was associated with failure to control seizures with firstline anti-seizure drugs (p=0.005; OR 3.27 [1.41-7.57]). Suggestion: Further research is needed to assess the treatment response of acute seizures based on etiology to various risk factors. Keyword : Seizures, Etiology, Therapeutic Response
