Abstract

Background: Defecation by definition is the phase in which feces are expelled from the rectum. Defecation pattern is one of the indicators for health especially in infants and children by assessing stool consistency, frequency of defecation, and stool color. Changes in normal defecation pattern lead to constipation and diarrhea. The prevalence of adolescents with constipation is 53.1% in Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Basic Health Research, the prevalence of school children with diarrhea is 8%. There are many factors cause changes in defecation patterns, including defecation positions and breakfast. Defecation positions determine the anorectal angle and breakfast triggers the gastrocolic reflex which are the factors in smooth defecation. The purpose of this study was to see the association between defecation positions and breakfast with defecation patterns in children of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang.
