Abstract

Insects that are active on palm plants are not widely known so that to get information about insect diversity on palm plants (A. pinnata) and surrounding vegetation, this research was conducted. This research used purposive sampling method. Insect sampling used pitfall trap, yellow sticky trap, and insect net. Trap installation and sampling were carried out once a week. Insect samples obtained were then identified using identification books and insect identification applications. The observation results showed that the diversity of insects on palm plants and in the vegetation around palm plants was moderate. The dominating insect on the palm plants was Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophillidae) while on the surrounding vegetation the dominating insect was Salina celebensis (Collembola: Paronellidae). Data analysis using NCSS software showed ρ-value <0.01 (significantly different) which means the number of insects obtained has a significant difference to the type of trap, tree diameter, object observed, research location, and week of observation. Research on insects on aren palm (Arenga pinnata) needs to be done further in the future to find out more about the relationship between insects and aren palm plants.
