Abstract

The bronze featherback (Notopterus notopterus, Pallas 1769) is a species of freshwater fish native to South Sumatra, Indonesia. This species has a high market value. The local people of South Sumatra utilize this fish as food and ingredients for the culinary industry of pempek and crackers. In addition, it is also traded as an ornamental fish. Increased fishing for this fish in the wild has caused its population to decline. To increase population and production, it needs to be cultivated. The objective of this study was to research is to determine the effect of stocking density on the growth performance and survival of N. notopterus. The research method used was a complete randomized design. The treatments given were different stocking densities (1, 3, and 5 fish/m2), each repeated three times.A total of 27 N. notopterus were used in this study (total length: 19–20 cm, bodyweight: 55–58 g). N.notopterus were fed with seluang fish (Rasbora sp.) twice a day. Leght and weight measurements was carried out at the beginning and end of maintenance. Temperature and pH measurements are carried out every day, while dissolved oxygen and ammonia are measured once every 10 days. The rearing of N. notopterus was carried out for 42 days. The results showed that the stocking density of 3 fish/m2 was the best treatment, with a total length growth of 2.37±0.12 cm, body weight growth of 12.22±1.09 g, a specific growth rate of 0.48±0.05%, and a survival rate of 100.00±0.00%. The water quality at the research is suitable for life N. notopterus. The conclusion, stocking density has a significant effect on the growth of N. Notopterus. The benefit of this research is to provide information about the adaptation N. notopterus in cages.
