Abstract

The manufacturing industry in Indonesia is experiencing rapid workforce growth, even reaching double in 2022 compared to 2016, this growth is accompanied by the growth of the manufacturing workforce in Southern Sumatra. Looking at this phenomenon, this thesis discusses the absorption of manufacturing labor. The factors studied are the human development index (HDI), investment and urbanization in southern Sumatra. The main theoretical basis used is labor demand. The data used in this research is secondary data, with an observation period from 2016-2022. The analysis technique uses quantitative descriptive. The analytical method used is panel data regression, the model chosen is the fixed effect model (FEM). The research results show that the human development index (HDI) has a positive and significant effect, investment has a negative and significant effect, while urbanization has a negative and insignificant effect on employment in the manufacturing industry in Southern Sumatra.
