Abstract

Background: Neonatal sepsis is an invasive bloodstream infection characterized by the presence of bacteria in body fluids such as blood, bone marrow and urine. Late-onset neonatal sepsis (LONS) is defined as an infection found in a baby after 72 hours or 3 days from birth in preterm babies and after 7 days of age in term babies. Method: This study used a descriptive observational method with prospective data collection techniques in patients with proven LONS in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Perinatology Room at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The data is analyzed and presented in the form of descriptions and tables, accompanied by descriptive explanations. Results: The frequency of patients with LONS was 28 subjects (100%), female and male gender 50%, delivered via vaginal and caesarean section 50%, each while the most prevalent age group is 8-28 days, constituting 67,9%. Clinical symptoms included respiratory distress 78,6%, lethargy 25%, jaundice 17,1%, temperature instability 7,1%, feeding intolerance 7,1%, and seizures 7,1%. The most prevelant complications were respiratory distress syndrome 78,6%, and meningitis 10,7%. Labroratory findings showed leukopenia in 3,6% of cases with leukocyte count < 5.000 mm3, hemoglobin < 13,5 g/dL 57,1%, 28,6% with thrombocytopenia, and 10,7% with thrombocytosis. About 21,4% had an IT ratio ≥ 0,2, and 42,9% subjects had hs-CRP levels ≥ 3 mg/dL. Conclusion: The most prevalent clinical symptoms in LONS were respiratory distress, lethargy, and jaundice. Laboratory characteristics in LONS included leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis, IT ratio ≥ 0,2, and hs-CRP ≥ 3 mg/L. Keywords: LONS, Clinical symptom, Laboratory
