Abstract
Introduction: Uric acid is the end result of purine metabolism with normal levels of 2.5-7.0 mg/dl for men and 1.5-6.0 mg/dl for women with conditions of uric acid levels above normal levels called hyperuricemia. Untreated hyperuricemia can lead to the accumulation of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints and tissues, which are often asymptomatic and represent the first phase of gouty arthritis. This phase is often detected incidentally when uric acid levels are checked. Therefore, gout is often detected when it has already reached the acute phase. The purpose of this study is to assess the correlation between uric acid levels and musculoskeletal pain in order to detect the first phase of gouty arthritis earlier. Method: This study is an observational analytical study with cross-sectional design. The sample used was primary data collected by consecutive sampling technique using questionnaires and portable uric acid test kits to the community of Sekip Jaya Village Palembang aged 17 years and above. Results: The respondents obtained were mostly female (74.3%), dominated by age 60 years and older (37.1%), more had normouricemic conditions (57.1%), and the most experienced pain was mild pain (65.7%). There is a fair (r: 0.361) and statistically significant (p: 0.017) correlation between uric acid levels and musculoskeletal pain. Conclusion: The most common pain experienced by respondents was mild pain, the uric acid status was dominated by normouricemia, and there was a positive and significant correlation between uric acid levels and musculoskeletal pain.
