Abstract
Background. Head lice infestation, known as pediculosis capitis, is a parasitic infestation caused by Pediculus humanus var. capitis (P. h. var. capitis). It is also an obligate parasite that must feed on human blood to survive. This condition commonly affects school-age children but can also occur in adults and spreads rapidly in densely populated environments, such as dormitories, orphanages, and Islamic boarding schools. The initial symptoms are characterized by persistent itching, especially in the occipital and temporal regions, which may extend to the entire head. Pediculosis capitis is influenced by risk factors such as age, gender, knowledge level, hygiene practices, and hair length. Method. This study is a descriptive research employing a cross-sectional approach, utilizing primary data in the form of questionnaires and physical examinations administered to students at Pesantren Izzatuna in Palembang who meet the specified inclusion and exclusion criteria through purposive sampling techniques. Results. In this study, 266 student samples were involved. The gender distribution was predominantly female (54.9%), with the majority aged <13 years (53,4%). The majority had hair length less than shoulder length (53.0%), and the highest hair washing frequency was more than 3 times a week (81.2%). The prevalence of head lice infestation was 37.6%. The Chi-Square test results indicated a significant association between gender, hair length, hair washing frequency, use of hair accessories, and shared use of pillows/mattresses (p < 0.05) with the prevalence of head lice infestation. There was no significant association between age (p > 0.05) and the prevalence of head lice infestation. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between gender, hair length, hair washing frequency, shared use of hair accessories, and shared use of pillows/mattresses with the prevalence of head lice infestation.
