Abstract
Students' algebraic thinking ability is still relatively low, so the problem-based learning (PBL) learning model is used as one of the learning approaches to improve students' algebraic thinking ability. This study aims to describe the algebraic thinking ability of Grade VIII students with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were students of Grade VIII of SMPN 1 Lahat. The research data were collected from observations, written tests and interviews. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model using LKPD based on the appearance of 3 indicators of algebraic thinking skills namely, (1) generational activities, (2) transformational activities, and (3) global meta-level activities. The results of this study led to the conclusion that the students' thinking ability is still in the low category with 21 students in the low category and 9 students in the medium category. Indicators of algebraic thinking ability whose highest occurrence is the Transformational activities indicator of 83.33% high category, Generational activities indicator of 68.33% high category and Global meta-level activities indicator of 23.33% low category
