Abstract

Indonesia has abundant low rank coal reserves. Low rank coal can be a source of fuel if utilized optimally. Making briquettes can be one of the solutions of low rank coal utilization. Briquettes from low rank coal needed to heated to reduce moisture content. Coal after heating tends to absorb water due to empty pores of coal. The addition of additives can act as a coating to prevent water re-filling the pores of coal. In this research, the additives used is Palm Fatty Acid Destillate (PFAD). PFAD is a byproduct of cooking oil industry that is non-edible and can be converted into biodiesel. This research was conducted to utilize low rancoal as an alternative fuel. In this research, the heated coal was crushed to the size of -30+50#. Then, coal is molded into briquettes with a strength press of 150 kg/cm 2 . Variables used in this research are the variations in heating temperature (100 0 C, 150 0 C, 200 0 C, 250 0 C, 300 0 C) and variation of binder addition (12%, 18%, 24%) with type of binder used is tapioca. The heating temperature has a strong effect on the characteristics of coal briquettes with PFAD. The optimal heating temperature at the best quality is in temperature of 250 0 C with inherent moisture 11,01%, volatile matter 46,25%, calorific value 5.670 cal/gr, moisture absorption 4,19% and have a burning time during 4,28 minutes. Binder addition has a strong effect on the caharcteristics of coal briquettes with PFAD. While the best quality of caol briquette of this research with binder compotition as much as 12% with inherent moisture content 14,49%, volatile matter 15,75%, calorific value 5.167 cal/gr, compressive strength 10 kg/cm2, moisture absorption 4,23% and burning time during 3,18 minutes.
