Abstract

This research was conducted to find out how Japan is trying to carry out cultural diplomacy in one of the cities in UK, namely London. The instrument used by Japan itself was Japan House London (JHL), a cultural center built on Kensington Street and initiated by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an effort to expand Japanese influence in terms of culture there. Not only London, Japan House cultural centers are also spread across other cities such as Los Angeles (United States) and Sao Paulo (Brazil). Japan House London is considered one of Japan's ambitious efforts to win the hearts of the world in terms of culture. Many elements of research on JHL are based on the involvement of actors, goals, activities and audiences contained in the core of Simon Mark's cultural diplomacy in his writing, titled ‘Core Elements of Cultural Diplomacy’. This thesis was researched using descriptive qualitative methods to present the research results written in it. Apart from that, this research resulted in JHL's efforts to act as a cultural center in London, England. This effort takes the form of Japanese cultural diplomacy in the form of cultural performances and exhibitions, authentic goods and culinary offerings from JHL. As a result, JHL not only provides exhibitions from the past, but also provides an overview of future trends - and not only that, JHL is a home to get to know Japan more deeply.
