Abstract
In Indonesia, synthetic (chemical) pesticides are heavily relied upon as materials to control plant pest organisms. This is because their use is efficient, easy to obtain and more effective in controlling and killing plant pest organisms. Farmers and pesticides are two sides that are difficult to separate. The use of pesticides by farmers is increasing, but not matched by an increase in farmers' understanding of the use of pesticides. This study aims to determine the understanding and compliance of farmers in using pesticides on food crops, the effect of pesticide use on pests and diseases, on natural enemies, and on neutral insects. This research were conducted using a questionnaire method with 30 respondents. The respondents are paddy farmers in Empat Lawang Regency. Determination of the score of pesticides on farmers' compliance behavior is done by asking 10 questions, as written in the questionnaire. Each question has 4 answer options and each answer has a score of 1 - 4. The data obtained in the form of primary data obtained through interviews with rice farmers regarding farmers' compliance with pesticides. Other data was obtained by conducting observation in the rice cultivation areas belong to the interviewed farmers, included types, populations, damage intensity of pests, types, incidence and intensity of diseases, types and populations of natural enemies, and neutral insects. Compliance of rice farmers in Empat Lawang District in pesticide application is in moderate category with an average compliance score of 163.6. Many rice farmers in Empat Lawang District do not understand about the type, time of use, and the right way to use pesticides. The correlation between the pesticide score and the intensity and percentage of pests are -0.23 and -0.18 respectively, which means that the relationship between the pesticide use compliance score and the intensity and percentage of pests is reversed. However, it has an effect on reducing disease intensity by 0.5% and on the percentage of disease by 0.7%. The use of pesticides has a negative impact on the population of natural enemies and neutral insects. At the time of observation, only 9 species of predatory insects were found with a total of 393 individuals and 3 species of spiders totaling 52 individuals. The neutral insect population found was only 11 individuals of 6 species.
