Abstract

The mathematical problem solving abilities of students in Indonesia can be said to be lacking. The causes of this statement include the teacher's inability to condition a class properly. So, to determine a method that will be used to improve classroom conditions, teachers need to understand their students' abilities first. Student abilities can be measured using diagnostic assessments. Because of the explanation above, research will be carried out with the aim of seeing the extent of students' mathematical problem solving abilities using diagnostic assessments. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with the research subjects being 34 students of SMPN 46 Palembang grade 8. This research is reviewed based on four indicators of problem solving according to Polya, namely (1) understanding the problem, (2) designing a plan, (3) run or carry out the plan, and (4) looking back. The final result of this research is that the indicator of understanding the problem obtained the highest result, which means that the student's ability is good in understanding the problem, while the indicator of checking again obtained the lowest result, which means that the student's ability is still lacking in looking back.
