Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) remain a major global health problem. Based on 2018 riskesdas data, the number of ARI cases in Lahat District was 9.17%. One of the risk factors for ARI is behavioral factors such as smoking behavior. The aim of the research was to analyze Correlation between the Number of Cigarettes and the Incidence of ARI in Smokers Age 15 and Over in the Work Area of the Merapi II Community Health Center, Lahat District. This research design is cross-sectional and uses quantitative methodology. The research sample was male smokers aged 15 years and over. The sampling technique is Cluster Sampling. Univariate, bivariate data analysis techniques using the chi square test, Mann-Whitney U, and simple logistic regression as well as multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression tests for risk factor models. The univariate test results showed that there were 32 people (35.6%) who were diagnosed with ARI, the bivariate results showed that there was a significant correlation between the number of cigarettes (p-value = 0.013), age (p-value = 0.029), education (p -value = 0.024), income (p-value = 0.011) with the incidence of ARI and multivariate results show that there is a difference in the average number of cigarettes and the incidence of ARI in smokers aged 15 years and over in the working area of Merapi II Community Health Center, West Merapi District, Lahat District (p-value 0.015) after being controlled by the income variable (OR adjusted 95% CI = 0.949 (0.910-0.990)). It is recommended that this can be a basis for knowing the dangers posed by cigarette smoke and can reduce the frequency of smoking gradually and can be a reference for improving health service efforts in Lahat District.
