Abstract
The availability of agricultural land is decreasing due to population growth, especially in urban areas. This makes agricultural land cultivation can be done by utilizing sub-optimal land such as riparian wetlands. This study aimed to determine tolerance of shallow water table levels on chaya plants in riparian wetlands. The study was conducted from May to July 2023 in experimental ponds located in the Jakabaring District, Palembang City, South Sumatra. The study used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with M0 (17.6 cm), M1 (15.6 cm) and M2 (11.5 cm) treatments. The results showed that the M0 treatment increased chaya growth in the parameters of SPAD value, canopy area, canopy diameter, leaf number, bud number, midrib length, leaf width, petiole length, leaf area, bud diameter, bud length, root fresh weight, stem fresh weight, bud fresh weight, leaf blade fresh weight, petiole fresh weight, root dry weight, stem dry weight, bud dry weight, leaf blade dry weight and petiole dry weight. Based on the visual appearance of the shoot, the M0 treatment showed a better appearance than the M1 and M2 treatments. This happens because the root growth is inhibited so that it has an impact on the growth of the plant shoot. The tolerance level of chaya plants to shallow water table is 17.6 cm.
