Abstract

The over use of computer will increase risk of disturbance occupational health. One of them is eye strain or asthenopia. Eye strain may occur as soon as the computer has been used for a long time or longer than 4 hours. The office employees group is one part of the highest risk category of eye strain. Harian Tribun Sumsel is a newspaper that covers by Kompas Gramedia, a largest media company, which cannot be separated from the use of computers, with the average duration is more than 4 hours, it’s too risky to get eye strain. This study aims to analyze the risk factor of eye strain in Harian Tribun Sumsel Palembang employees 2018. This research used cross sectional study and used 44 Harian Tribun Sumsel employees who chosen based on proportional sampling method. The univariate analysis used frequency distribution and the bivariate analysis used chi square statistic test. Result of bivariate test, known that there is one independent variable relates to eye strain, which is lighting (p-value= 0,002 and PR 95%CI= 3,355). Meanwhile, there are no relation between age (p-value= 0,445), eye breaks (p-value= 0,811), duration of computer use (p-value= 0,486), and distance from computer (p-value= 0,716) to eye strain. This research suggested that periodical medical check up especially eye condition must be held, place the ornamental plant or mini aquarium in working room, and to overcome the lack of lighting can be done in ways, such as turning on all lamps during work, replace the broke one, setting the lamp’s position, replace with LED lamp
