Abstract
Indonesia has 8,112,103 hectares of rice fields which was producing paddy reached to 75,550,895 tons in 2015. But until now, Rice imports are being implemented with a total of 1,018,577.821 tons in the period January-April 2016. Up to year, agricultural land conversion become to infrastructure and other sectors commonly happened in Indonesia and its interpreted 42% or 3.1 million hectares of wetland threatened to be converted to non-food sector. Wetlands can be an alternative land for agricultural development according to no-few land area i.e. 34.12 million hectares. However, this land has limiting factors that is different from dry land i.e. acidic pH, high saturation of toxic substances, fluctuating ground water levels, as well as the existence of peat also be a limiting factor in the wetlands. Thus, it’s needed researching on soil fertility level to assess the characteristics of swamp land in the Riding village pangkalan lampam districts ogan komering Ilir recgency. This research was conducted on November 2015 until August 2016 by purposive sampling method used with the observed variables at the field i.e. coarse material, the thickness of peat, sulfidic layer depth, surface rock and rock outcrops. Soil samples were collected for analysis at the laboratory i.e. N-total, K20, P205, soil pH, CEC, alkalinity, base saturation, and organic-C levels whilst climate data were obtained from the climatology station class I Kenten Palembang. Based on observations in the field resulted, neither the surface rock nor the outcrop were not found, the climate data were also categorized as very suitable (SI), but the grade suitability for floodwaters was included as unsuitable class (N). CEC and organic-C concentration were high but the pH and base saturation were very low. The availability of nutrients included high suitable class (SI) except T5 samples that have moderately class (S2) for availability of P205. The thickness and depth of peat were classifled as very appropriate except for point T6 and T7 which included moderately suitable classes (S2). Likewise with sulfidic alkalinity and depth that included high suitability classes (SI), so that the actual suitability classes are not suitable (N) with the limiting factor floodwaters. Potential suitability classes, there are two SPT i.e. SI and S2 with limiting factors peat.
