Abstract

REPRESENTATION IN FILMS CONTINUES TO DEVELOP UNTIL NOW, DEPICTING FAMILY CONFLICTS IN FILMS IS INCREASINGLY DIVERSE. FAMILY CONFLICT IN THE MOVIE NOKTAH MERAH PERKAWINAN IS DEPICTED THROUGH THE CONFLICT BETWEEN IN-LAWS AND SONS-IN-LAW WHO ARE DEPICTED AS HAVING TOO MANY PROBLEMS THAT INTERFERE WITH THE CHILDREN'S FAMILY LIFE IN BUILDING A HOUSEHOLD. THIS STUDY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE REPRESENTATION OF FAMILY CONFLICT CONTAINED IN THE MOVIE NOKTAH MERAH PERKAWINAN. DATA IS OBTAINED FROM SNIPPETS OF MOVIE SCENE IMAGES AND DOCUMENTATION WITH QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS. THIS RESEARCH USES RAFFEL'S SUPPORTING THEORY OF CONFLICT, WITH ROLAND BARTHES' SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS (TWO ORDERS OF SIGNIFICATION) THROUGH DENOTATION, CONNOTATION AND MYTH. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY INDICATE THAT THE REPRESENTATION OF FAMILY CONFLICT IN THE FILM NOKTAH MERAH PERKAWINAN CONTAINS ELEMENTS OF FAMILY CONFLICT, NAMELY BLAME, CRITICISM AND JUDGMENT, COMPETITION AND BIAS, DECEPTION, GOSSIP AND INTERFERENCE, AND WRONG OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS. THERE ARE PATRIARCHAL ISSUES, NAMELY GILANG AS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY BEARS THE BURDEN OF BEING A BREADWINNER, WHILE AMBAR BEARS THE BURDEN OF HOUSEHOLD AFFAIRS AND CHILDREN, MEN'S AUTHORITY IS ALSO CONSIDERED HIGHER THAN WOMEN WHO ARE RARELY INVOLVED THROUGH DECISION MAKING AND WOMEN ARE CONSIDERED WEAKER THAN MEN.
