Abstract

This research uses rubber fruit shells as raw material for making hydrochar. Hydrochar was activated using 5% KOH and modified using Zn(OH)2. This research calculated the rhodamine B adsorption process using the shaker method and sonication method. The optimum conditions for adsorption of rhodamine B by hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 were determined based on variations in adsorbent mass, concentration of rhodamine B, and contact time at pH 9. Hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 determined the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm in the rhodamine dye adsorption process B. Based on the results of XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS and BET characterization, the modification of hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 has been successfully carried out. The sonication method was able to adsorb more rhodamine B than the shaker method with an increase in the absorption capacity of hydrochar - Zn(OH)2 in adsorbing rhodamine B by 73.11%. The optimum conditions obtained in the rhodamine B adsorption process using hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 were an adsorbent mass of 0.075 grams, a rhodamine B concentration of 60 mg/L, and a sonication time of 10 minutes. The adsorption capacity of hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 obtained was 14.10 mg/g. The kinetic model for the adsorption of hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 on rhodamine B dye follows a pseudo second order kinetic model with a regression value of 0.9957. The hydrochar – Zn(OH)2 adsorption isotherm model tends to follow the Freundlich equation. The kinetic adsorption capacity obtained is greater than isotherm.
