Abstract

Electricity is a primary need for all humans. Electrical energy can be converted into mechanical energy or opposite it by using an electric machine. The electric machine used in this research is a direct current motor (DC motor). When used as a mover, a DC motor not only produces mechanical energy but also dissipation energy called heat so that the DC motor can potentially overheat. Overheat can reduce the usage life and even can cause damage of a motor. To evaluate overheating in DC motors, research was carried out in the form of direct measurements of working temperature on DC motors coupled to AC generators (gensets). Temperature measurements of DC motors and AC generators were carried out for 10 minutes with load variations are 1000 W, 1400 W, and 2600 W. From the results obtained in this research, the highest DC motor temperature occurred when the load was 2600 W and the operating time at the 10th minute was 41.6oC. At 2600 W load, the motor produces the largest power losses, namely 46.21 W, and produces the smallest motor efficiency, namely 94.3%. At a load of 1000 W, the DC motor temperature is 33.9 oC in the 2nd minute. At the 4th minute, the DC motor temperature is 34.2 oC. Until the 10th minute, the DC motor temperature is 36 oC. Heavy loading and long tool testing times can increase the temperature of the DC motor. Heavy loading can also increase power losses and reduce efficiency so that the motor can overheat.
