Abstract
The condition of coal is greatly influenced by the geological conditions that occur in its depositional environment. Coal is formed through a deposition process that occurs in specific locations called depositional environments. This depositional environment can be a swamp, delta, river, lake, or area such as a basin where plant material accumulates and settles. This condition will affect the quantity of coal, which includes the geometry of the coal. Coal geometry is fundamental to know and study because it will influence the geological model of coal in the research area in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, which is in the South Sumatra basin. The depositional cycle in the South Sumatra basin consists of 2 depositional phases, namely the Transgression and Regression Phases. The Transgression Phase produces Telisa Group deposits consisting of the Lahat, Talangakar, Baturaja and Gumai Formations. Next, the Regression Phase produces Palembang Group deposits consisting of the Air Benakat, Muara Enim and Kasai Formations. The research area is in the Muara Enim Formation, composed of sandstone, mudstone and coal layers. One of the methods used for coal exploration is the well logging method, because with this method you not only know the geological conditions of the area but you can also find out the lithology, distribution and thickness of the coal layers below the surface. Electrofacies analysis is carried out by looking at the gamma ray log patterns in the logging results which can be used to determine the depositional environment of the research area. Geological modeling uses the Micromine application with the aim of knowing the distribution of coal seams in the research area using the kriging method which is used to interpret the magnitude of values at unsampled location points using data from sampled location points in the vicinity which can then be used as a reference in carrying out mining plans for get maximum results. Based on field observations, several outcrop points were found that display other lithological contacts with coal which displays the stratigraphy of the research area. Apart from that, there are 7 drill points that display subsurface lithology with different lithologies and depths and logging is recorded using gamma ray log patterns which are used for electrofacies analysis. The results of the research will be in the form of two- and three-dimensional cross-sections of the distribution of coal seams, coal geometry in the form of average coal thickness and an understanding of the depositional environment in the research area.
