Abstract

Head lice infestation, Pediculosis capitis, is caused by the parasitic insect Pediculus humanus capitis on the skin and scalp of humans. The prevalence of Pediculosis capitis worldwide is quite high and varies. The prevalence of Pediculosis capitis in Indonesia has not been precisey determined, but it is estimated to be around 15%. Pediculosis capitis in children can lead to a decline in health and inteligence. It is prevalent in densey populated areas in Indonesia. The research aims to analyze the determinants of Pediculosis capitis among female students at the Integrated Islamic School of Raudhatu lUlum Boarding School in Sakatiga Indralaya. The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study involving 132 respondents seected through multistage sampling. Independent variables in the study included humidity, population density, shared hijab usage, shared comb usage, shared prayer cloth (mukena) usage, shared pillow usage, hair type, and hair length. The dependent variable was Pediculosis capitis. Data were analyzed univariatey, bivariatey using the chi-square test, and multivariatey using multiple logistic regression. The results showed that 64.4% of respondents were infected with Pediculosis capitis. Pediculosis capitis was influenced by the shared usage of hijab (p-value 0.000), shared comb usage (p-value 0.000), shared prayer cloth (mukena) usage (p-value 0.000), shared pillow usage (p-value 0.000), hair type (p-value 0.000), and hair length (p-value 0.026). The dominant variable influencing Pediculosis capitis among female students, when controlled for other variables, was the shared usage of prayer cloth (mukena) (PR=20.812). Six variables showed a significant association, while two variables did not have a significant reationship in the findings of this research. It is recommended that educational institutions, such as boarding schools, pay more attention to the cleanliness and health of their students.
