Abstract

The objective of this research was to look for the kind of organic mulch that influcnlial on young growth of gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) and weed. The research was conducted at the test farm of Agriculture Faculty Sriwijaya, University of Sriwijaya, Indralaya. The research was conducted frorn July 2004 to October 2004. The research was arranged with Non Factorial Randomized Block Design. The are seven treatments and four group so that there were 28 unit of treatments. The treatments were no organic mulch (MO ), weeds mulch 2,5 kg per plant (Ml), weeds mulch 5,0 kg per plant (M2), weeds mulch 7,5 kg per plant (M3), gambir waste product mulch 2,5 kg per plant (M4), gambir waste product mulch 5,0 kg per plant (M5) and gambir waste product mulch 7,5 kg per plant (M6). The results of this research showed that the treatment of gambir waste product mulch 5,0 kg per plant (M5) can to increase the leaf number, stem diameter, branch number on young growth of gambir in comparison with another treatment. Giving the waste product mulch 5,0 kg per plant (M5) can retard the growth of weed, because it had potency to decrease coverage of weed (%), weed population and dry weight of weed. I On the beginning of research, found eight species of weeds was found those are Jmperata cylindrica, Ageratum conyzoides, Digitaria adscendens, Borreria laevis, Mimosa pudica, Desmodium heterophyllum, Mikania micrantha, and Brachiaria distachya, mean whiie at the end of the research was found 13 species of weeds those are Ageratum conyzoides, Borreria laevis, Physalis angulata, Borreria alata, Mimosa pudica, Cleome rutidosperma, Desmodium heterophyllum, Mimosa invisa, D i gitar ia adscendens, Imperata cylindrica, Ottochloa nodosa, Cyperus spchacelatus, dan Brachiaria distachya, so there are altemation was happened to the growth of weed, but the weight of weeds were down.
