Abstract

This research was intended to study maize root system and canopy and also to get well adapted maize varieties to nutrient deficiency conditions. This research was conducted from November 2005 up to January 2006 in green house of Agronomy Department of Agriculture Faculty, Sriwijaya University at Indralaya. Method used in this research was Split Plot Design method with three replications. The main plot was nutrient treatment which were H1 (100% nutrient) and H2 (30% nutrient). Meanwhile, as the sub plot was maize varieties which were consisted of VI (Sukmaraga), V2 (Lagaligo), V3 (Lamuru), V4 (Bisma), V5 (Bayu), V6 (Srikandi Kuning-1), V7 (Srikandi Putih-1), V8 (Poza Rica 8666), V9 (Maros Sintetik-2), V10 (Pulut), Vll (Toray 1), V12 (Toray 2), V13 (Toray 5), V14 (Toray 6), V15 (GH-1), V16 (GH-5), V17 (GH-9), and V18 (GH-12). The result of the study showed that four varieties were the most toierant to nutrient deficiency conditions based on the root system. They were Lamuru, Poza Rica 8666, Toray 1 and Lagaligo. Based on plants’ canopy growth, there were five toierant varieties, which were Lamuru, Poza Rica 8666, Toray 1, Toray 2 and GH-1.
