Abstract
The aim of this research was intended to investigate agronomy characteristies and heritability estimate of maize populations with high protein content. This research was conducted at farm area in Tanjung Seteko, Indralaya, Ogan Ilir. It was started from May to August 2005. The method used in the research was Randomized Block Design with three maize populations as tested materials of Toray 4, Toray 5 and Toray 6. These three populations were chosen due to the high protein content resulted from syn-1 generation. Every populations was repeated 4 times which was consisted of 10 rows of plant from the same ear (Ear to Row Method). The observed variables were plants high at 14, 28, 35 and 42 days after planting; length, diameter, and weight of cob; amount of dry grain/plant, weight of 100 grains, protein content of the seed, and seed characteristies (visual). The result of this research indicated that maize populations generally showed good agronomy characteristies, with yield potential of 5,71 - 6,93 ton/ha, and protein content of 11,86 - 12,31 %. The analysis showed that heritability estimation value (h2) were 0,30 - 0,65 with Standard error [SE(h2)] of 0,27 - 0,34.
